This is the first in a series of abstract art therapy paintings that hold special meaning for me as I muse upon the creative process. This has helped me reconcile longstanding emotional conflicts (along with a great therapist!).

Art therapy works by engaging the physical senses for focus – like a meditation.  Essential:  A quiet space without interruption.  Nonessential:  A specific subject or style.

  • Sensation:  Use of the body, standing and moving to paint.  Use of the hands and a variety of tools, including brushes, palette knives and rags, to mix and apply colors.  The feel of the buttery oil paint stroking the canvas.
  • Sight:  Exciting colors that I’m afraid to wear, especially primary colors that pop but that are so visually stimulating.
  • Smell:  Oil paint, turpentine.
  • Sound:  Mood altering music (I like 60’s rock … what’s your fave?)

What matters most is the creative process itself, getting colors from mind to canvas!
